Transferring Service
When you join the teachers’ scheme you can transfer your pension credit from a previous scheme provided that:
- the previous scheme meets HMRC (formerly known as the Inland Revenue) requirements; and
- you apply for a transfer within one year of entering pensionable teaching service.
The sum of money offered as a transfer value from your previous scheme does not guarantee you the same amount of service in the STSS as you had in your previous scheme.

Transferring AVC Rights
Transfers from the teachers’ schemes for England & Wales and Northern Ireland
We have a special arrangement with these schemes which means that service credit transferred from them gives you exactly the same amount of service in the Scottish Teachers’ Superannuation Scheme as you had with them. We will accept transfers from these schemes any time up to retirement.
To apply for a transfer of benefits from Teachers’ Pensions (England and Wales) please complete application form STSS:(TVIN)1 and also STSS:(0211FM)1.
Transferring Service from other occupational or personal pension schemes
You may be able to transfer to the STSS pension rights you have accrued in another occupational or personal pension scheme. However, this depends on various factors, e.g. the former scheme meeting Inland Revenue requirements. If all the relevant conditions are met and you confirm that the transfer may proceed, the STSS will accept a transfer payment representing the benefits accrued in your former scheme. The amount of the payment will determine the length of service to be credited in the STSS.
Please note, if you have service which you wish to transfer into the STSS this must be done within 12 month of joining our scheme. To apply to transfer pension rights, please complete application form STSS:(TVIN)1 or contact an administrator at the Agency, details of which can be found in the Contacts section of our website.
Transferring AVC Rights
Additional Voluntary Contributions (AVC’s) cannot be transferred to the STSS; they can only be accepted by the Prudential who administer the teachers’ in–house AVC scheme. Teachers can choose to retain their AVC’s in their former scheme. However, doing so would cause the status of the AVC to change from “in-house” to “free-standing”.
The SPPA will not accept monies in respect of AVC's. These must be forwarded to the Prudential direct. Details on how to contact the Prudential can be found at our Prudential AVC page.
Alternatively, please contact your SPPA administration team, details of which can be found in the Contacts section of this site.
